The General Motors Diet

The Background

I have known of this diet since more than a decade now, having personally followed it multiple times. It was initially handed over to me as an article on paper. With the advent of the Internet, I decided to create an upload a copy of that article. It has since been on my site (which has changed address multiple times).

Note that this is the Vegetarian Variant of the so-called original diet.

The Claimed Background of the Diet

The following 7-day diet and health program was supposedly developed for the employees of General Motors Inc., and their dependents. The program was developed in conjunction with the grant from the US Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. It was first tried at the Johns Hopkins Research Centre and was approved for distribution by the Board of Directors of General Motors Corporation at a general meeting on August 15, 1995.
The above is not a verified claim, and per my research, GM did not sponsor any such diet.
But nevertheless, people have observed very positive effects of following this diet. At best, it makes you feel very refreshed with some weight loss. At worst, it is a harmless diet which still does cleanse your system.

Unless you suffer from any health disorders which need medical attention, you can safely follow this diet.

  • You will find the poll and results on the usefulness of this diet interesting. Do check it out! It has an amazing set of personal experience comments as well.
  • Also – see some FAQs on the GM Diet.
  • How does the diet actually work, and what effects does it have on the body? A commentary here.

The Daily Plan The details

This program is designed for a target weight loss of 5-6 kg per week. It will also improve your attitude and emotions because of its systematic cleansing effects. The effectiveness of this seven day plan is due to the fact that the foods eaten burn more calories than they give to the body in caloric value. This plan can be used as often as you like to without any fear of complications. It is designed to flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well being. After seven days you will begin to feel lighter by at least 10 pounds. You will have an abundance of energy and an improved disposition.

During the first seven days you must drink 10 glasses of water each day.

The Diet
Day Plan
Day One All fruits except bananas. Your first day will consists of all fruits you want. It is suggested you consume lots of watermelon and cantaloupe.
Day Two All vegetables. You are encouraged to eat until you are stuffed with all the new and cooked vegetables of your choice. There is no limit on the account or type. Avoid oil and coconut while cooking vegetables. Have large boiled potato for breakfast.
Day Three Any mixture of fruits and vegetables of your choice. Any amount, any quantity. No bananas yet and no potatoes today.
Day Four Bananas and milk. Today you will eat as many as eight bananas and drink three glasses of milk. You can also have one bowl of vegetables soup.
Day Five Today is a feast day. You will eat 1 (one) cup of rice. You also have to eat 6 (six) whole tomatoes and drink 12 (twelve) glasses of water today to cleanse your system of the excess uric acid you will be producing.
Day Six Today is another all vegetables day. You must eat 1 cup of rice today and eat all the vegetables you want cooked and uncooked to your heart’s content.
Day Seven Today your food intake will consist of 1 cup rice, fruit juice and all the vegetables you care to consume. Tomorrow morning you will be five to eight kilograms lighter than 1 week ago. If you desire further weight loss, repeat the program again. Repeat the program as often as you like, however, it is suggested that you rest for three days before every repetition.

You have your system under control now and it will thank you for all the purging and cleansing you just gave it. Even more than a diet program it is good to follow this diet once in a while to clean your digestive system and remove toxic substances that have a accumulated in the system.

General Motors Wonder Soup

The following soup is intended as a supplement to your diet. It can be eaten any time of the day in virtually unlimited quantities. You are encouraged to drink large quantities of this soup. (Looking for a soup recipe? See the Health Soup Recipe!)

The Wonder Soup
23 oz water wonder-soup-in-a-bowl
06 large onions
02 green peppers
03 whole tomatoes
1 cabbage
1 bunch celery – add herbs and seasoning as desired.

General Advice

This program is highly recommended for women and men above 40 for whom excess weight is especially dangerous. Excess weight for women aggravates arthritis problems and leads to rapid joint decay. Pain and joint deterioration can be lessened by weight loss as weight loss removes the stress on the knee joint. Excess weight is the most critical factor in keeping good health and excess weight is responsible for the most problems including coronary diseases, heart problems, arthritis and cancer among other serious life threatening diseases. Most serious health problems can be avoided by the single function of maintaining an ideal weight. Daily mild exercise of 20 minutes is also essential. Do not tire yourself out, but being regular in your exercise and maintaining an ideal weight goes a long way in ensuring a happy, healthy and long life.

    Hello all.

I started the diet on 2nd December. Today on my 5th day. Followed the diet very strictly so far. 1st day was terribly bad. Felt weak towards the afternoon along with a headache. I was craving for all of the oily junk i used to eat before. I cheated in the evening with a small handful of raw peanuts and that made me survive.

My diet on 1st day was: Semi-ripe papayas, apples, oranges and 5 litres of water.

Second day diet: 2 small boiled potatoes with pepper and little salt along with a small cube of butter. Boy, that was so awesome!

Third day: Raw veggies. i had carrots, cabbage, cucumber mostly and 2 tomatoes. i never had a specific time for food though. i used to keep on munching whenever i felt i was hungry. 5 litres of water.

Fourth day: 2 bananas for breakfast with half a cup of milk without any sugar. I did not like the milk and decided to have just water. i kept on snacking on the bananas though.

I am on my Fifth day: boiled red kidney beans with pepper and a little salt ( i am a vegatarian during this diet). Had tomatoes as well.

I observed a weight reduction – 4 kilos by end of the 4th day.

Enough to motivate me…planning to follow the diet strictly till 7th day.

Really feels good and “fluidic” :)

i am now conscious of what i eat and do not have any cravings!

Very nice! Thanks for sharing here.
Did you vote in the poll? :)

      • guest

Thanks! And on Sunday i completed my 7 days of the GM diet. Final verdict? Lost 5.6 kilos and very happy about it. Intend to take this up again after 2 weeks.

        @jlaop: Yes i did vote… today :)

  • Hiral

Hi I started GM diet from Tuesday 26th Nov and today is my third day. Till now it went quit well.. But i have got 1 question.. Does rice really alternate the beef part on the 5th and 6th day ?? And here it is mention 1 cup of rice… ! cup of cooked or cooked rice ? Could you please suggest. Thanks.

    • jlaop

The primary purpose of the meat was to supply proteins.
You are right – rice does seem out of place. That is why, some have suggested replacing rice with some dal (lentils.)

People have tried using Mung dal. You may want to use replace rice with that? Sprouted Mung is better.
The quantity in terms of the cup size should not matter much. I suggest you consume the least possible amount which satisfies your hunger.
When you have more hunger pangs, consume the Wonder Soup in as much quantity as you wish.
      Best wishes!

Started GM diet from Monday 25th Nov.. First day was very difficult & hungry pangs were more.. just managed the day :).. Second day was better.. i thought it will be difficult to manage, but i could able to handle.. Hit gym also, did 30 mins walk & 20 mins cycling..just not to missout on my routine.. today is third day.. had b/f of only fruits.. in b/w had salted lime soda.. lunch had boiled vegetables.. will have again fruits at 5pm & hit gym…i am scared of trw, 4 more days to go

    • jlaop

      Very well done!
My personal experience is that once you are past the first three days, you find it extremely easy to make it through the remaining days. If my experience holds true for you, tomorrow (on the 4th day), you will suddenly start to feel a sense of freedom – freedom from any kind of craving. And you will be able to resist any kind of food. Especially those which are not good for you.
      All the best!

I am a pure vegetarian and in India its very hard to get water melon in this season , please suggest me some another fruits and please give me a diet chart I mean how much fruits or vegetables i can have in a day

  • Fawaz

I am wondering if the vegetables should be boiled ? Is it OK if i eat it without boiling, the result will be the same or it is recommended to boil the vegs ?

  • Dipti

I am planning to start this diet plan. But can we have one sugar free tea every morning as I’m very found of tea.

    • Root

You can definitely have tea. But avoid sweeteners if possible. Real sugar is bad because of the calories, and sugar-free substitutes aren’t healthy in general.

  • Vidhs

Hi, Today is my 4th day. but I was wondering that I am not doing any exercise during diet,
So is that ok or not ? My weight will be lost or not ? If it is lost then how much ?

    • Root

The diet by itself will make you feel great at the end of 7 days. In fact, you will start to feel much better by about the 4th day itself.
If your focus is weight-loss, then exercises are very essential. Every one has a different body constitution. Some people may lose weight by simply following this diet and nothing else. But for some, exercises may be absolutely necessary. One size does not fit all. You will have to find your regimen.

  • maja

  • chaitanya

Sprouts are not vegetables – so, you will have to avoid them!

      Best wishes.

  • Nikki

can u please tell in vegetables can we have pulses also? and can we have daal also?

    • Ravindra R. Jaju

You should not be having pulses with the vegetables. Although you can add some spices and salt.

      All the best!

  • Nikki

  • Nikki

hi, i have started today……feeling bit hungry :(

  • seema

    • Ravindra R. Jaju

Keep it going! Many people do find the third day very hard, and once you are past that day, the fourth day onwards feels very easy! Good to know you had the third day going without any trouble.

  • Priya

I am currently on my first day. So far, i ate grapes, 1 apple and 2 kiwis. I was soo hungry that i just had to cheat. i had 5 chips :( I feel guilty. But i guess the first day is always hard. I hope i wont cheat again!

    • Ravindra R. Jaju

      Haha! :)

Don’t worry – keep going. All the best!

  • allu

    hi ,
I have just started the diet and completed day 2 . Had a hard time with the vegetables, can any one just help me with what all can i mix with the vegetables while cooking like salt, pepper, mirchi powder , turmeric etc.. Could you help me please.
    Thanks in advance

    • Ravindra R. Jaju

You can definitely use some spices and salt for taste. It would be very unappealing otherwise, right? :)
Just be watchful of the amount of salt though.

  • Gayathri

Can any one say me how to maintain and after how many days interval we should follow the same..if we leave the gm diet as such what will happen to us ..please reply me…—- Gaya3

    • Ravindra R. Jaju

The GM diet is no magic diet. It is only a nice diet to help you cleanse and get your system on track.

You will have to follow it up with a good regimen of diet and exercises. It’s not a diet to follow forever. So, you will have to go back to your normal diet afterwards.

Eat in limits, don’t eat late in the day, and avoid heavy foods. Introduce a good amount of physical exercises in your daily schedule. Eat lots of seasonal fruits and vegetables. You will do just great!
